Andy Rice

Speaker. Writer. Strategist.

Andy Rice is a brand strategist, public speaker, and advertising commentator, based in Johannesburg, South Africa.

Andy received an M.A. degree from Cambridge University, longer ago than he cares to recall.  He began his career as a brand manager, but after seven years in marketing management, chose to move to the advertising side of the fence, joining Ogilvy & Mather in Johannesburg.  He headed up the agency’s strategy and account planning department at a time when Ogilvy was repositioning itself on the platform of Brand Stewardship, a process in which the group’s South African agency was closely involved.

In 1997, Andy co-founded Yellowwood Brand Architects, the first specialist brand strategy consultancy in South Africa.  Yellowwood became part of the TBWA Group in 2009 and is recognised as a leader in its field across Africa.  Andy remains involved as Chairman of Yellowwood.

Andy has been passionate about the linkage between creativity and commercial effectiveness throughout his career. This led to his involvement in the APEX awards, South Africa’s equivalent of the Effies, almost 15 years ago.  He has served as Chair of the APEX Jury for over 10 years, and in 2015 was chosen as a judge in the Creative Effectiveness category of the Cannes Lions Festival of Creativity, which is recognised as the world’s premier creative awards programme.

He has co-hosted an advertising feature on Talk Radio 702 for many years, initially with Jenny Crwys-Williams, and currently with Bruce Whitfield on the Money Show.  He is regularly asked to comment on marketing issues of the day by the likes of ENCA, SABC, CNBC and other media channels.

He recently received a Lifetime Achievement Award from his peers in the brand communications industry.
